Curacao Chess Festival 2010 kicked off yesterday July 23rd where the preparations were as usual one year long, starting since the end of last years tournament. Warming up for this years tournament, on Thursday a simul was given by IM Robert Ris (Netherlands) in which young and veteran players took part. In the evening GM Joel Benjamin gave a workshop prepping those players interested in some last minute tips and techniques before taking on the 9 round challenge.
The moment of truth began Friday at 3:00 pm after our opening ceremony where the games commenced with 26 participants in the open group and 32 participants in the youth. Every year we have returning and new guests. Returning this year are GM Joel Benjamin ( USA), IM Robert Ris ( NED), FM Alexander Hernandez ( VEN). First time visitors are Soren Bech Hansen Soren Moller Hansen both from Denmark, Michael Boualit , French Guyana, Teresa – Eliza Boualit, Ecuador. In the youth group we have players from Trinidad & Tobago. We welcome them all along side all the participants of Aruba and Curacao. As the first round went very quickly but with good games none the less, We are all very excited of what the second round will bring. As the days go by the tension will build up and once again we are looking at a tournament with all the spices of a good chess festival.
